Sambar deer

Near threatened Sambar deer is the largest deer to inhabit the island, living in large herds you can see them grazing the breathtaking plains of this beautiful National Park. The sub- species found in Sri Lanka is one of the largest found in the world, in size of antlers and body mass. Horton Plains is the most visited national park in the country and personally I believe it’s the most regulated park. Kudos to Mr Dayarathna, deputy warden of HP. If you’re visiting Horton Plains please remember it’s a National Park, things you don’t do or not allowed to do in Yala or Wilpattu are applicable in HP also! Avoid honking, loud music, feeding animals, loitering, littering and eating during your visit. There is a rest area with clean washrooms just at the World’s End entrance that you can use to have your meals. P.S We certainly missed a Leopard sighting due to honking.
